The original language and the spread of its culture
Netflix has changed the habits of cinema and television in the world and in Italy, according to many is an 'enemy' to fight, under penalty of the closure of cinemas but there is one thing we can agree on: the enormous contribution that Netflix and streaming platforms are giving to the spread of the original languages. Italian with its dialects for Suburra, the Spanish of the Casa di Carta, the Mexican of the masterpiece Roma by Alfonso Cuaron and countless other examples: the series and the films are seen in their original language, perhaps with subtitles, favoring the circulation in the world of the native language and therefore of culture. If we think that in Italy, until a few years ago, seeing a film in its original language was a sort of treasure hunt in the cinemas of large cities, we can understand how culturally important the work done by Netflix and the like is. According to a survey by Babbel, the app for learning languages online, 53% of Italians watch TV series in their original language, being perfectly aware of the possibility of combining the useful with the enjoyable with TV series. In fact, 88% of young people and 92% of the over-45s agree that Italian television should start offering original language broadcasts with subtitles, as is the case in many other countries. 58% of respondents said they did not want to miss anything from the original version of a TV series, so they could learn a new language and practice the languages already studied, especially to improve pronunciation (according to 50% of respondents) and expand vocabulary (48%). Men (75%, compared to 63% of women) and young people are the most likely to appreciate this exercise. In addition, 46% of the respondents had gratifying feedback in real life, using ways of saying learned through a TV series. The possibility to choose one of the languages in which the TV series has been dubbed or to insert subtitles is successful if you already know or at least have basic knowledge of a foreign language, but it is useless in case you do have to start from scratch. How to do that?
How to use Netflix to actually learn a new language from zero?Today is possible to install on Google Chrome an extension, called Learning Languages with Netflix that allows you to learn a language watching movies and TV series. After installing it on your browser, Netflix will show you a translation of the subtitles that you have set by default. For example, if you want to learn Spanish, you can set the subtitles in your language via Netflix, while the extension will show the translation in Spanish. In this way, you will be able to learn new terms quickly by comparing them directly with your mother tongue. The extension is free and can be installed on both Windows 10 and Mac. In addition to the ability to see a double subtitle, the extension also offers other features. For example, it highlights less common words and uses a language commensurate with the user's experience. For each word, you can also hear the exact pronunciation. Learning Languages is very useful, especially if you have to face a trip to a country whose language you do not know: we can learn the basic words to greet and ask for directions
There are plenty of opportunities, all you need is the goodwill and a little bit of astuteness! What are you waiting for, go and watch your favorite TV series on Netflix!
